The Penguins That Hop When We Win
In the ice world of Tank Avenger, penguins scurry along the edge of the battlefield and hop the moment we win a round.

Some victory moments are loud: fireworks, fanfare, confetti. And some victory moments are the kind you almost miss. In the ice world of Tank Avenger — Mixed Reality, the nicest one belongs to the second category. It doesn’t happen on the battlefield, but beside it: that’s where the penguins stand, and when we win a round, they hop.
Where the penguins live
A quick word on the stage. Tank Avenger builds its battlefield on our real floor. We first draw out the floor area we want to use, and on top of that a miniature fortress, walls and enemy tanks appear. Our own tank is about nine centimeters long. Around this play area, the game builds a little world, also only on the floor and never on furniture.
The fourth and final chapter is the ice world, levels 163 to 202. Here there are walls of snow and ice glass, crates of pressed snow, a fence of ice slabs with glowing crystal pillars, plus an ice castle with a beacon, a frozen ship and a polar station. Snow falls across the whole room, and an aurora lies on the walls. And between all of it: penguins.
They aren’t enemies and they aren’t obstacles. They’re part of the scenery. When we get close, they scurry away. When we win, they hop.
Why a hop can do more than fireworks
Fireworks say: “You won.” A hopping penguin says: “The world noticed you won.” That’s a small but important difference. The reward doesn’t come from a menu, but from the surroundings. The scenery reacts to us.
Then there’s the location. In mixed reality, the world stands right in the middle of our room. So the penguins are standing quite literally at the edge of our rug, somewhere between the battlefield and the sofa. Anyone who glances up for a moment after a close win sees them hopping there. You don’t have to click anything — you just have to look.
And it fits the chapter. The ice world is the most demanding world in the game: the floor is a slippery ice surface, tanks glide for about a second after we let go of the stick, and we have to steer early. After a slide like that, a little hop of joy at the edge feels like a pat on the back.
The other worlds do something similar
The penguins aren’t alone. Every world in Tank Avenger has its own little life at the edge:
- In the city world, butterflies flutter, chimneys smoke, a windmill spins faster when we walk past, and at the end of a round the church bell rings.
- In the desert, tumbleweeds roll by that you can kick away with your tank or your foot, along with dust devils and a circling vulture.
- In the jungle, there are fireflies, falling leaves and birds that take off when we get close.
The ice world has the penguins. Of all of them, the hop on victory might be the friendliest detail, because it’s tied directly to our success.
Three tiny delights
- The reward stands in the room. No pop-up, but figures celebrating next to our real floor.
- The world remembers us. First the penguins scurry away when we come, then they celebrate with us. The scenery notices us.
- You’re allowed to miss it. The hopping doesn’t push itself on you. Whoever sees it gets a little bonus moment.
What we’d steal for our own projects
- Celebrate at the edge. Not every reward has to sit in the center of the frame. A reaction in the scenery can feel warmer than a big effect.
- Scenery with two states. Penguins that flee and later hop tell a mini-story with just two movements.
- Animals as a mood indicator. An animal that’s happy is something everyone understands instantly, no text needed.
A quick note on looking
If you look over at the penguins after a win, you should stand still or move slowly while doing it. The play area sits on the real floor, and the game shows a safety overview at every start: no pets in the room, nothing on the floor, distance from furniture, no one else in the play area, stay on the lit tiles. So real pets should stay outside, so that the only animals in the room are the drawn ones.
Our doodle for this ping: a single penguin mid-jump, a small ice floe beside it, and otherwise lots of white paper. You can read more about the game in the Meta Horizon Store.
